Things to Do with Kids Near Westview Cottage, Port William: Our Family Guide

One of the questions we get asked most by families booking Westview Cottage is “what is there for the kids to do?” And honestly, it is one of our favourite questions to answer, because this part of Scotland is absolutely brilliant for children of all ages.

This is our genuine family guide. No filler, no fluff. Just the things we actually know and love.

Start Right Outside the Front Door

Before you even get in the car, there is plenty to keep the kids happy right in Port William itself.

Crabbing at the harbour is a must, and it keeps children entertained for hours. All you need is a bucket, a line and some bait. You can pick up crab buckets from The View café and bar just down at the port or help yourself to the ones stored in the plastic garden box outside the back door of the cottage. Free fun, right on your doorstep.

While you are at the harbour, watch the fishing boats come in at high tide. It is one of those simple pleasures that kids genuinely love, especially if you are lucky enough to see the catch being unloaded.

Second Sands beach is just a three-minute walk along the road. Access is down a concrete boat ramp right onto the sand, easy for little ones. It is a popular spot for paddling and exploring, and in a warm summer you can even swim there.

Animal Encounters They Will Never Forget

Kitchen Coos and Ewes is one we cannot recommend highly enough. It is a Highland cow experience where the kids get up close with some of the most iconic animals in Scotland. Brilliant for all ages and one of those activities everyone talks about on the way home. Book ahead as it gets busy.

Bellymack Farm is another one that will blow their minds. The red kite feeding happens every day at 2pm and is absolutely spectacular, with up to 200 of these magnificent birds swooping in low overhead. The visitor centre means you can watch in comfort whatever the weather. There is also a café and shop on site.

If you head into the Galloway Forest Park, you can also feed the red deer, which is a magical experience for younger children, especially (check out Rosie’s waterfall on Google Maps, as it is just 5 mins away, and it is a wonderful walk past a loch to see it).

A Proper Big Day Out: The Mull of Galloway

If you want a day out that works for all ages, the Mull of Galloway is fantastic. It is the most southerly point in Scotland and has a working lighthouse you can climb, an RSPB nature reserve and the brilliant Gallie Craig café right on the clifftop with stunning views. The wildlife spotting, from seabirds to seals, keeps even the most easily bored teenagers happy.

For Rainy Days

Let’s be honest, this is Scotland, and sometimes it rains! Here is what we recommend when the weather turns:

Newton Stewart Cinema on Queen Street is a real gem. It is a community-run picture house that shows films most days from Wednesday to Sunday. It is the kind of old-fashioned cinema that children love, and it is a lovely way to spend a wet afternoon. Check their website for what’s on before you go.

The Cocoabean Company in Twynholm is a brilliant chocolate factory and visitor attraction that kids absolutely love. As well as chocolate workshops where they make and take home their own creations, there is indoor soft play and an outdoor adventure park. It is about 45 minutes from the cottage and a brilliant full rainy day activity. Book the chocolate workshops ahead, as they fill up fast, especially in school holidays.

Ryan Leisure Centre in Stranraer has swimming and activities and is about 25 minutes away. Great for burning off energy whatever the weather.

For Older Kids and Teenagers

Green Valley Golf Academy has a driving range about 20 minutes from the cottage, perfect if you have older kids who fancy something a bit different.  Our two teenagers get very competitive here!

The Galloway Forest Park is brilliant for cycling and hiking, and if you visit after dark, it is one of Europe’s largest Dark Sky Parks. Stargazing with teenagers on a clear night out here is genuinely extraordinary.

Stranraer Watersports is also nearby for those who want to get out on the water.

One More Thing to Look Forward To

We are so excited to share that our family is currently opening the Maxwell Tavern, a new pub in Port William, before the end of 2026. It will be a proper village local just a short walk from the cottage, with a warm welcome for families. Watch this space!
