A September Treat on Our Doorstep: The Stranraer Oyster Festival
If you’re planning a September getaway to Westview Cottage, we want to let you in on something special happening just along the coast from us. Every year, the town of Stranraer, about half an hour’s drive from Port William, throws open its doors for the Stranraer Oyster Festival, a weekend that brings the whole community together to celebrate the very oysters that have been harvested from Loch Ryan for generations.
We haven’t made it along ourselves yet (it’s always the way, isn’t it, the best things are on your own doorstep and somehow you never get round to them), but we’ve heard so much about it from friends and neighbours in the area that we couldn’t wait to share it with you.
What Makes It So Special
This isn’t just a food festival, although the food is, of course, a huge part of the appeal. It’s a proper community celebration, with something for everyone under one roof (or rather, spread across the whole town).
For the food lovers, there are celebrity chef demonstrations showing off just how versatile a humble oyster can be, alongside stalls from local producers and traders selling the best of what Dumfries and Galloway has to offer. If you’ve never tried an oyster fresh from Loch Ryan, this is the place to do it.
For a bit of friendly competition, the Scottish Oyster Shucking Championships are a real highlight. Watching skilled shuckers battle it out for the title is surprisingly good entertainment, and it’s the kind of thing you won’t see anywhere else.
For families, there’s plenty laid on for children too, so it’s not just a grown-ups’ day out. Bring the whole crew and make a day of it.
For music lovers, live music runs throughout the festival, adding to that warm, buzzing atmosphere that only a proper community event can create.
And underneath it all is something rather lovely: the festival raises funds for the Stranraer Development Trust, supporting community-led projects in Stranraer and the surrounding area. So every ticket, every stall, every pint bought at the bar is helping the town it celebrates.
A Perfect Excuse for a September Stay
September along this stretch of coast is a wonderful time to visit. The crowds of summer have quietened, the light is soft and golden, and there’s a stillness to Luce Bay that makes it feel like the whole place belongs to you. Add in a lively, oyster-fuelled festival just down the road, and you’ve got the makings of a proper Scottish weekend away.
Westview Cottage makes the perfect base for it. Come back from a day of oysters and live music to a warm wood-burning stove, sink into bed on our Simba mattresses, and wake up to those sea views across the bay all over again.
Plan Ahead
The festival takes place every September, so if this has caught your eye, keep an eye on the Stranraer Oyster Festival website for confirmed dates and ticket details closer to the time, and get your Westview Cottage stay booked in early. September dates have a habit of going quickly once word gets round.
And if oysters aren’t quite your thing, don’t worry, we’ll be back soon with another local gem worth building a trip around: the Wigtown Book Festival, just up the road. Whatever draws you to this beautiful corner of Scotland, we can’t wait to welcome you to Westview.
Ready to make it happen? Book your stay at Westview Cottage direct and see for yourself why this corner of Scotland is worth the trip.
